Local/State Government Representation

Since our beginning, BKSH has represented state and local governmental entities. Currently, the firm represents multiple cities and counties of various sizes, as well as a state department of transportation. BKSH has represented each of our current clients for seven years or longer.

For our local governmental clients, we perform full-service representation on any issue related to the federal government, with an emphasis on identifying federal funding opportunities for individual projects within the community. Past successes have included obtaining Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) funds from the Department of Justice for improving computer technology capabilities in city police cars, securing federal funds for the Army Corps of Engineers for a water riverfront project and acquiring Housing and Urban Development funds for rebuilding a neighborhood block.

Transportation projects are always a priority for local government clients, and we help each entity annually achieve federal transportation dollars for projects in their region. We work with virtually every Appropriations Subcommittee on a regular basis to achieve federal funding for our local government clients. We also have extensive contacts in federal agencies spanning a variety of programs from which grant funds can be sought for local governments, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Justice and the Department of Transportation.

In certain county projects, a team works on a regular basis, focusing on a broad spectrum of issues ranging from appropriations to health care to energy. BKSH is responsible for general Washington, D.C. representation, monitoring legislation and floor debates, attending hearings and markups and continuously cultivating solid relationships with members of each county’s Congressional delegation, Department of Transportation officials and important decision makers within the county. BKSH often conducts weekly conference calls to debrief client contacts on events or sends a monthly newsletter to recap our work throughout the month.
